Free Access: Dirty Beaches at Le Poisson Rouge

I saw them back in July with Iceage but forgot to post the picture.  Very amazing live.  My phone unfortunately died by the time I got to see Iceage on stage.

I have been swamped lately... work, work, work... then traveling.  Trying to catch up with people, trying to check out all these places that my friends open.  I don't have many photos from my long trip to France and Spain.  Hopefully I can post some soon when my friend sends me all the photos.  I just finally got photos from my trip to Dominican Republic.  I will head to California in about two weeks.  I'm going to be there for an extended amount of time.  I think (and hope) that will be my last flight of the year.  I'm getting really exhausted from traveling so much.  I don't know how people can handle this for a living.  Living out of a suitcase isn't as fun as it seems.  Especially when you are constantly running around everywhere.  I think right now I just want to feel grounded.  Anyways, I will eventually do a post about what I pack on my trips.  I'm really great at minimizing, which everybody is so surprised by.  I hate checking in my baggage, so I always have a carry on.

Free Access: Thurston Moore at The Allen Room

I forgot to post this a while back. This was for the American Songbook Series that Lincoln Center was throwing.  The best view I could ever have.  You can see all of Columbus Circle right behind Thurston as he played.   I have been going to a lot of interesting concerts that have been a lot more formal.

I was so happy to finally be able to see her in a small space.  I liked how they changed their sound.

Free Access: Small Black at Mercury Lounge

CMJ has been going on... so there are great shows happening all over the city. I was really looking forward to Small Black live. Too bad the stage was so dark... but this was the best I could do with a video.

Free Access: Portishead at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC

Amazing show...

A lot of people having been complaining about people talking during concerts in New York, especially when the headlining bands are playing.  In the recent shows that  have been attending in the last 2 weeks, I could understand.  At the Roseland, I wasn't even able to hear Four Tet, which opened for Radiohead.  It was a shame.

While I was watching Portishead, there was this couple next to me that was ruining every ones time because we could hear their whole conversation.  I was hoping it was going to end after one song.  People have to understand that there is an etiquette when you go to shows.  Talk loud enough that the person that is with you (which is usually next to you) can hear you.  Talk in their ear, don't have it where a 5 foot radius can hear you.  There is no nice way to tell this couple to lower their voices.  I simply said, "I apologize, I'm sure that your conversation is important, but I can't even hear what I came to this concert for.  You are ruining every one's time by talking and we don't want to have to hear your conversation instead of Portishead."

They immediately got quiet.  You have to speak up when these things happen because no one else is going to do it.  Portishead hasn't played in NYC with a headlining tour in 13 years... I wasn't going to let anyone prevent me from enjoying this.  I don't understand why people go through all these hoops to get into a sold out show and not allow themselves to really take in the experience.  I don't go see live music just to be seen there.  Does that make sense?  Anyways... just a little rant about things.

Free Access: Florence and The Machine at The Berkeley Greek Theater

I got 2 tickets for this sold show for $14... it was all sorts of epic.
Dear Cameron-

You are just blowing my mind right now. Please come and see us in NYC soon.

(I was listening to Glasser's Ring album and RJD2's Deadringer a lot while I was in California.)

Free Access: Beirut at Wellmont Theatre

Phenomenal show... they sounded amazing live and the sound was great. It reminded me of the Warfield in SF.

Free Access: Zola Jesus at Bowery Ballroom

I would've normally taken video or photos but my phone died by the time she got on stage. She has an amazing voice. It's too bad that all the live videos that are posted on Youtube aren't the best quality... she has a great presence.

It was a nice surprise that The Drums joined the line up that night.
