Chanel Mobile Art Exhibit Cancelled!

I hate the economic crisis effecting the whole world.  Chanel announced today that they are canceling the mobile art exhibit.  Sorry London, Paris and Moscow... the fashion gods are depriving you of that luxury...

Newspapers becoming magazines?!

Is this all backwards?

First magazines are worried about online based publications, so they build their own... now newspapers (such as The Chronicle and L.A. Times) are afraid of magazines, so they make their own as well? What is going on here?

While I was at work yesterday, I was given insider info by an employee of The Chronicle that they are planning to branch off and add on a glossy magazine based on the newspaper. "A coffee magazine," the resource explained, because more people are able to touch a monthly magazine compared to a daily paper.

Now, I check up on WWD saying that The L.A. Times is doing the same? I have to admit that The NY Times Style Magazine is great (especially when they exclusively posted Daphne Guinness' short film) but it doesn't mean these publications will end up being the same.

Since The Chronicle is making this move... maybe I should try to join in on the fun?

To get an internship...

Requires you to already have internship experience. Is that crazy? How long am I suppose to be working for free here? I mean, I'm totally fine about that... but I require the requirements are just insane. It's already hard enough to get into the industry, but how am I suppose to be working for free for like 2 years...

I get really excited around this time of year because there are a ton of internship postings for Fall at all of the notorious magazines in your nation. But when I found out that our fashion bible, WWD had an intern opening for fashion/accessories... I wanted to be able to apply...

Magazines ad sales decline in the double digits.

Don''t make me say goodbye.

It's so upsetting to hear that the industry that I plan to start a career in is declining. Please internet... don't take away the pretty glossy pages of W Magazine away from me. (At least not until I could have contributed to the magazine in some way.)

Damn you, ECONOMIC DECLINE!

According to WWD, the Media Industry Newsletter has shown a decline in ad pages for the last 6 months. The luxury market magazines like Elle, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue hasn't shown a decline, but the mass market magazines, like Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Marie Claire and In Style are in the negative. "
Harper's Bazaar increased ad pages 9 percent, to 890. Vogue reported flat numbers, coming in at 1,328 ad pages. W reported a 2 percent drop in ad pages, to 878," says WWD.

I admit that when I wake up in the morning, I don't read the newspaper. I go directly to fashion/magazine blogs to get my daily fix with industry news. Even though I want to get into the high gloss print industry, I don't have this huge urge to have to subscribe to a magazine when they show so it online (sometimes even more online).

Do you really think print magazines will go away?

Honestly, I think they eventually will... even though I believe that having something in print that I can take around is a lot better than having to lug around a computer trying to look for WiFi. I just think that magazines will slowly move over to using their websites because it's so much cheaper to publish something online than print it.

Who knows... anything can happen.

Nautica Women's Wear is KICKED to the curb.

Nautica Women's Wear no longer exists as of TODAY. So, take as much in as you can while it lasts ladies.

VF Corp, which owns Nautica and John Varvatos, increased by 7.7 percent, which meant $149 million in earnings as of March 31st. Nautica Women's Wear has declined 11 percent this past quarter though, which was the reason why they kicked the line towards the exit door. This breaking news has been made official ladies and gents. You can go ahead and use my boxes of Kleenex on my desk if you run out.

But really... who ever even wore Nautica stuff past the year 2000, during the mega boom of American sportswear designers? Maybe if I got it on sale for 75% off and I needed another navy and white stripped hoodie... maybe then I would. Besides that, VF Corp didn't get any of my earnings.

Roberto Cavalli for Sale.

According to WWD, Roberto Cavalli is up for grabs. Turns out Cavalli has been talking about it for the last 18 months but hasn't found a good suitor.

Cavalli's designs have been sought after by celebrities and socialites for more than 40 years. Cavalli designed Jennifer Lopez's whole waredrobe during her last tour to keep her pregnancy a secret, but instead Cavalli slipped and accidentally told reporters the news.

Even though he launched a must-have line for H&M and has expanded his distribution, the privately owned company, will have to start the bidding process soon. The luxury line hasn't been growing as quickly as they originally thought.

"
Recent estimates value Cavalli in the region of 1.2 billion euros, or $1.89 billion at current exchange, well short of the 2 billion euro, or $3.14 billion, price tag the designer is believed to have slapped on the business he set up more th
an 40 years ago," says WWD. Cavalli has rejected offers for about $1.6 billion (USD) because he "wanted to maintain a majority of his stake in any prospective deal..."

With the economy going into a recession, it might look like Cavalli might have to take that deal.
