I'll have my cake and eat it too.

John mentioned to a friend of his that he was going to be moving SF with me. He also told her that I was going into the fashion industry (particularly, fashion magazines) and she said, "Does she have thick skin? Because they are really competitive out there."

Wow. Really?! Gosh darn it... I NEVER knew that. (Rigggghhhtt.)

I don't want to sound arrogant, but it was insulting to hear that. I know what I'm getting into and it's fierce. People in this industry push and shove for years to try to get to the top. I don't want to push and shove, I just want to work hard because it's something I love. I don't want to play dirty. People that play dirty don't last very long because they always get caught. Being in any industry or job that makes you a lot of money and fame on top of that will always be competitive. It's just the rules of nature. If you're going to make a lot of money or aspire to... you have to work hard for years and years until you are close to your goal.

His friend also said,
"My friend worked for (insert major publication) in NY and they made it so hard for her that she use to cry."

I'm expecting this industry to try to chew me up... and swallow me whole. I know people are going to try to make me crack but I'm there to stay. I'm a tough cookie. I got it from my parents. They came from nothing and are successful now. I'm so proud of them. They came here from a different country and had absolutely nothing. They made a great life here and I want to do that for myself, in my own way.

As a child, I was really emotional when I was criticized about anything. Now that I'm older, I have this weird stamina for criticism. I don't think of it as a personal attack. I want to take any kind of criticism that will help better me as a person. I try not to take things personally. I'm okay with if you think what I'm wearing is crazy/weird/overdone. This is very much me. Take it or leave it.

I love magazines and looking at trends that they make, but I'm not really a person that likes follow trends. They go away and the money that you spend on a trend becomes wasted after a season. I like things that will look modern for years... something that isn't said to be in style but it looks good on me because I understand my body and my style. I don't want part of the industry that does things to make people happy. I'm here to push boundaries. I'm on this earth to be outside of the box. I'm here to make my stamp in this industry.

And when I get there (which won't be right away, of course) I'll have my cake and eat it too.

Content.

Since this blog is really new to me... I don't know what direction I want to go into. Besides giving you fashion news which is something that MANY (upon many) blogs/news sources already do... what would you like to hear from me? Or what would you like to see?

I really don't want this to start being about something negative, which an important someone said to me last night.

What I'd really like to do is do something like The Sartorialist but obviously with my own kind of twist. Since I do not live in an extreme major city, it's really hard to find people with style. It's not like I'm able to go to these great cities all over the world and be able to walk around for hours to photograph people. I don't even have a camera (which will change in the next few months by the way), but in the mean time, I'd like you guys to direct me towards something that would work best for me. I don't want it to be a repeat of something else that is REALLy easy thing to do. So what do you think?

If you can't comment... please email me.

the nortorious fall... that makes you rise.

Everyone remembers when Naomi Campbell fell on the catwalk. It was Vivienne Westwood's Anglomania fashion show in Feb of 1993. I actually got to see the the 12 inch platforms at the De Young Musuem in SF last year. It's funny when you think about it because I'm sure she was really really embarrassed because she is suppose to be this amazing graceful model, but that fall made her like everyone else in the world. Models for some reason get categorized as if they were goddesses from another planet. Even though that was one of the worst things a model can do, it gave her so much media coverage. People even understood the mistake was just something simple.

I know so many people that don't know about fashion, let alone know who Vivienne Westwood is, but they remember Naomi's Fall. I was researching about fashion designers and ran across something very interesting that Vivienne Westwood said in an interview with SHOW studio. People in the industry and what not, asked her questions about her experience in the fashion industry. And here is what she said about her fall:

Naomi Campbell, London: Why did you continue to give me your special blockbuster shoes after I fell down the first time, was it that you had faith in me?

Vivienne Westwood: I wanted you to do it again because we had two more shows to do, but I would never have tried to persuade you if I had thought you really didn't want to. I thought you would want to because you looked so beautiful. You just looked so incredible in them. You know, Naomi, I think you're the Aphrodite of the modern world and the walk of century, this and the last. Remember, we gave you a stick, which you nobly accepted and then held it, and then flourished it a chest-height, demonstrating that you did not need it. The fall was spectacular. Your fall was better than an animal that's just been killed, because although it was physically natural, it was also artificial. Civilisation is artificial, not natural. Fashion is part of civilisation. What I have faith in is your heroic pride.

What Westwood is saying to Naomi is a great inspiration because people do make mistakes and the first time is never going to be perfect. When you do it again and again, that is the only way you can perfect it. It's about taking chances and staying there until the end, because you want to prove yourself and everyone else wrong and there is this feeling about overcoming things. Honestly, I think it feels better than doing it perfect the first time.

I'm finally taking my jump into the fashion industry and since the industry likes to see what you've contributed, I finally caved and started a blog. I constantly browse blogs and I love to read things and see people lives and culture. I'm kind of weird about letting people know my thoughts but it's time to get over it. I don't think there isn't enough out there displaying fashion that isn't in a major city. I know that living in the suburbs, it's hard to find people with style, but I think there are a lot more out there than people think. Some of the best minds came from small towns with big ambitions... it's just so happens that they just eventually move to the city.
